Eleanor and Allen Warren watch the evaporator in the Allen sugarhouse in Croghan
Boiling down sap into syrup in the evaporator in the Allen sugarhouse. Warren Allen (left) and Eleanor Allen (right). Croghan, NY. Circa 1990. Donated by Warren and Eleanor Allen.
Eleanor Allen moved from New York City to the Croghan area with her husband Warren in 1975. She had never lived on a farm, but got the idea that making maple syrup would be an ‘easy lifestyle change’ from a book she read. The reality of life on a sugarbush was a little different from what she envisioned, but she and Allen made a life in the maple syrup business. Listen to her story in the audio clip.
