Warren Allen boiling maple syrup at the Allen sugarhouse in Croghan
Warren Allen and Steve Zehr boil maple sap into syrup at the Allen sugarhouse. Croghan, NY. Circa 1990. Donated by Warren and Eleanor Allen.
Warren Allen grew up in Watertown, then moved to New York City where he lived with his wife until 1975, when they decided to move back to the North Country. The Allens wanted to make maple syrup, and though it took a while to get their sugar bush up and running, eventually they were able to use their knowledge of New York City to sell both their own maple syrup, and their neighbors syrup, in the city. Listen to Allen talk about that journey in the audio clip.
