Treating tuberculosis in Saranac Lake

In the late 1800s and 1900s, Saranac Lake became a haven for people seeking a cure for tuberculosis. The largest and most famous sanatorium was established by Dr. E.L. Trudeau. Other patients attended other nearby sanatoria, like the one at Ray Brook. The Trudeau Sanatorium also had a school of nursing and a tuberculosis training program. The Trudeau Sanatorium closed in 1954, after the discovery of effective antibiotic treatments for tuberculosis. These photos showcase the treatment spaces & the medical personnel who staffed them.
