Sorting mail at the Post Office in Canton

Five men sort mail inside the Canton Post Office. Mail carts on left. Circa 1940s. Canton, NY.

Michael Welch started carrying mail in Potsdam in 1989. He’d been working as a window clerk just outside New York City for a couple years, but when he got the chance to come home to St. Lawrence County as a “city” delivery carrier with the United States Postal Service, he jumped at the opportunity. He worked the route for 31 years, until his retirement at the end of December 2017.
