Lebanese businessman Scander Maroun in Carthage

Scander Maroun was one of the first of a number of Lebanese businessmen who settled in Carthage. A native of Bekahotoota, Lebanon, he arrived in 1900. He worked first with his brother Abdoo for four years before founding his own grocery and clothing store at 211 State Street.  Abdoo operated a dry goods store right across the railroad tracks from his brother at 221 State Street.  Both brothers remained a vital part of the business district until their deaths. Circa 1920-1930. Carthage, NY. From the Town of Wilna Archives.
