McFadden & Anderson Grist Mill employees in Heuvelton

Grist mill workers pictured from left to right: John Craword, Jr., Charles P. Anderson, Harlan Smithers, William Smith. The store was owned by George C. McFadden, who bought it in 1887 to establish a grist mill and feed store. The building was erected in 1853 at the northwest end of the bridge on State Street by Nathan Ford Giffin. Giffin sold boots, shoes, groceries, harnesses and also had a tannery. Photo taken between 1906 (when Heuvelton was electrified) and 1916 when owner George C. McFadden closed the business due to illness. Heuvelton, NY.
