Inside the Carbola Chemical Company in Natural Bridge

For many years, mining was a large part of the North Country’s economy. Here are photos of the Carbola Chemical Company Mine and Plant, where talc was mined and processed from 1900 into the 1970s. The facility contained a 600 foot deep mine shaft, a talc mill, laboratory, machine shops, offices, and several storage buildings. But while the plant supported the majority of Natural Bridge, it wasn’t always the best work environment. For more information, check out our story on the hazards of working at the Carbola plant.
